THE ROLE OF BASS

What Does a Bass Player Do?

The bass guitar occupies a unique space in music – it's the bridge between rhythm and melody, connecting the drums with the melodic instruments.
Your Role in the Band:

The Foundation

You provide the harmonic foundation for the entire band. Your notes define which chords the band is playing.

Locking with the Drummer

The bass and drums form the rhythm section. You'll learn to lock your bass lines with the kick drum and snare, many of our bass students also take drum lessons to deepen their rhythmic understanding.

Connecting Rhythm and Melody

Bass lines are both rhythmic and melodic, creating moving lines that enhance harmony while maintaining groove.

Serving the Song

Great bass playing is often subtle. Sometimes the best bass line is the simplest one. We'll teach you when to play busy and when to play simple.

At Manhattan Music School, we teach you to be a bass player who understands their role and purpose in the band.

BASS TEACHING APPROACH

Our Bass Teaching Philosophy

At Manhattan Music School, we believe bass guitar is learned best by playing with other musicians.
While technique and theory are important, bass is fundamentally about groove, timing, and playing with others.

Solid Technique

We teach proper left and right-hand technique from the beginning, preventing injury and giving you control and speed.

Music Theory for Bass

Understanding scales, chord construction, and harmony makes you a better, more versatile bass player.

Timing is Everything

As a bass player, you're part of the timekeeper. We use metronomes, drum backing tracks, and play-along exercises extensively.

Playing with Others

Through our band workshops, you'll develop the listening skills and musical awareness needed to be a great band member.

Ear Training

Many bass players learn songs by ear. We develop your ability to hear bass lines, recognize patterns, and figure out songs independently.

All our bass teachers are qualified with AMEB, Rockschool, or ANZCA accreditations.

  • 5-string bass- includes an extra low B string, great for advanced players.
  • Electric bass- the most popular option for most students.
We can provide recommendations on choosing a bass that fits your budget- and the good news is, beginner models are very affordable. We also stock a range of quality bass guitars and accessories in store.

    Bass Guitar Lessons FAQs

Bass and guitar are different instruments with different roles. Bass has fewer strings (usually 4 vs 6) and typically focuses on one note at a time. The best choice is whichever instrument you're more drawn to!
