It's a personal decision, but a rental is the safest way to get started. Kids grow fast, so renting avoids buying multiple instruments. Many stores offer rent-to-own, which is a great middle ground.

The violin rewards consistent, daily effort more than most instruments. New students should aim for 15 to 20 minutes each day, with longer sessions as you become more experienced. We always give clear practice goals after each lesson.

The first few months can be noisy, but it gets better fast! Keeping practice to daytime or early evening hours helps. Practice mutes are inexpensive and very effective at lowering volume.

Classical is the best starting point for most students. The technical skills you develop translate directly to every style. From there, your teacher can introduce contemporary styles whenever you're ready.
