Quick Progress

Most students can play simple songs within their first lesson or two. This instant gratification keeps motivation high.

Portable

Take it anywhere! The ukulele fits in a small case or bag, making it perfect for travel, picnics, or playing at friends' houses.

Transfer Skills

Skills learned on ukulele transfer beautifully to guitar and other stringed instruments if you later want to expand.

Fun & Joyful

Most students can play simple songs within their first lesson or two. This instant gratification keeps motivation high.

UKULELE TEACHING APPROACH

Our Ukulele Teaching Philosophy

At Manhattan Music School, we believe ukulele lessons should be fun, encouraging, and rewarding from day one.
The ukulele is the perfect instrument for building musical confidence.

Start Playing Immediately

We get you playing songs right away. There's no better motivation than making actual music from your very first lesson.

Proper Technique

While the ukulele is easy to learn, proper technique matters. We teach correct finger positioning, strumming technique, and posture to prevent bad habits.

Musical Foundation

We integrate basic music theory, rhythm, and chord understanding naturally into lessons, building a strong musical foundation.

Song-Based Learning

Playing songs you love is the best way to stay motivated. Bring your favourite songs and we'll teach you how to play them.

Accompanying Yourself

Many ukulele students also sing. We can help you learn to strum and sing simultaneously if that's your goal.

Performance Confidence

Through our workshops and rock show, you'll develop the confidence to share your music with others.

Individual Attention

Every lesson is one-on-one, ensuring personalized instruction at your own pace.

All our ukulele teachers are qualified with AMEB, Rockschool, or ANZCA accreditations and bring years of teaching experience.

What You Need to Get Started

The Ukulele

You'll need your own ukulele for lessons and practice. Ukuleles come in four main sizes:

  • Soprano - The classic small size, traditional ukulele sound (most common for beginners)
  • Concert - Slightly larger, more frets, fuller sound
  • Tenor - Bigger still, often preferred by adults and those with larger hands
  • Baritone - Largest, tuned differently (more like a guitar)

We recommend starting with a soprano or concert ukulele. Quality beginner ukuleles are very affordable (from around $50-80).

Accessories

  • Tuner or tuning app (essential!)
  • Soft case or gig bag for protection
  • Strap (optional, but helpful)

Ukulele method books and chord charts are available for purchase in-store. We can recommend resources suited to your learning style.
